Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did practice problems for geometric series, telescoping sums, and harmonic series for the student's quiz tomorrow. She had a better understanding on the materials of geometric series, and she was more comfortable changing the indices as well as finding the key terms of the series. We also went over problems on telescoping sums, and I summarized some strategies for her to use when rewriting telescoping sums and find the sums. At the end, we did more review problems to prepare for her quiz. She seemed to have mastered the materials pretty well."
"We worked on adding and subtracting integers tonight. The session went really well. The student also told me she received an 84 on her first math test."
"We worked on a chapter covering direct variations, which he was able to go through using the online modules and videos. He had no problem stopping me to ask questions if he was confused. I advised him to take the time to actually go through every module and all the checkpoints/practice problems before heading to the assessments at the end of the chapter. For the assessments, I advised him to cover up all of the answer choices and work out the problems on his own, and then later compare the answer he came up with to the possible multiple choice answers. I also advised him to always have paper and pencil and to work out every problem step-by-step by hand rather than in his head. The goal that I set for him is to have completed up to unit 6 (we worked on unit 3 today) by next week's session and have passed all checkpoints and assessments. A plus from today's session is that, after several practice problems and having the concepts and reasoning explained, he was able to work through the lessons just fine."
"We covered the student's algebra homework which involved solving algebraic expressions and then applying the problem solving strategies for real-world scenarios. Her areas of focus are when adding and subtracting negative integers and when lining up decimal places. She showed great improvement at solving the problems, decreasing her time from 3-4 minutes a problem down to approximately 1 minute a problem in addition to checking her work. She is fantastic at showing her work. With time, she will definitely grow in her self confidence as she sees the results of her practice."
"We worked on limits of a function and operations with limits of a function. The student also worked on determining if the limit of a function exists. In addition, we briefly reviewed how to determine the formula for a line that is tangent to a graph of a function at a specific point."
"The student and I briefly went over some problems he missed on previous quizzes involving the definition of a mathematical function and the vertical line test. We spent most of our time practicing problems involving transformations to functions. He showed considerable improvement in the amount of help needed to get through one of these problems. I left him with two more problems to practice on his own before going to sleep for the night."
