How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Phonics is an essential skill children need to understand in order to learn how to read and write. Phonics builds a child's understanding of the relationship between sounds and letters. Once they grasp that different letters represent different sounds they can begin to sound out - or "decode" - written words. They also use phonics to take the words in their head and spell them out on paper. Reading and writing skills are important for essentially everything your child does later in life. Varsity Tutors can find your child a tutor in Montgomery County, PA, who is well versed in teaching phonics.

The study of phonics requires students to learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they represent. Once they have understood the symbolic meanings of letters, they can to decode words, speaking the sounds the letters represent in the order written. During this part of the process they also learn how to blend the sounds contained in a word, so it is pronounced as a single verbal unit. This process can be painstaking, requiring a student to repeatedly decode words from a simple, controlled set of words. The repetition helps your child build proficiency in the basic decoding process. The vocabulary is slowly expanded over time, growing in complexity and introducing new blending concepts. Our educational directors in Montgomery County will find your child a phonics tutor who might help them quickly gain an understanding of how to comprehend written words.

We started using a workbook. The student has come so far since we've started that all of his books at home are too easy for him to read. This workbook has him reading less, but more challenging text, and adds reading comprehension exercises to our tutoring.

This week, we worked on a variety of subjects. The student had some history homework, with standardized testing questions. We looked over the answers the student had made, and I helped him work through them. We also worked on adding, dividing, etc. with polynomials. Many of his answers had errors, as he seems to get into trouble by not always keeping track of what is positive and what's negative.

The student had a large project to work on today. He chose his favorite book, the first Harry Potter book for this project. He had to write two newspaper articles about the main characters. He had to use 3-4 traits to describe Harry Potter while writing this. He did a spotlight piece on another character. Then he created a word search using the names of ten characters in the story. He will finish by finding 2 photos online and using them to illustrate the project. The student enjoys doing this creative type of work and his enthusiasm really showed today. Great work!

The student worked on comprehension for most of the session, then he worked on changing improper fractions into mixed numbers. His comprehension is improving. I am working with him to look back rather than guess when he is not sure.

The student and I worked through an Orton-Gillingham lesson, reading and writing sounds, reading and writing words, reading text and writing sentences. We also did some work with visual and auditory discrimination skills. She did do a really excellent job reading the book that she had brought home from school. She has made great progress with using picture, context, and phonetic clues whereas earlier in our work, she was unable to figure out any words that she did automatically recognize. She still has work to do, but she is making good progress.
