Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Montgomery County, PA Microbiology tutoring
It was our final meeting before the student's biology final, so we decided to focus on reviewing the concepts we went over in the last two sessions. I quizzed her on the different parts of cell respiration, and we were both happy to note that she knew a lot more about the topic than before. After a quick general review, I had her go over her old quizzes/tests with me, with an emphasis on identifying any mistakes she had made in the short answer sections. Overall, she was feeling more prepared for her final by the end of our time. She had a few more things to review, but felt that it was a manageable amount to do on her own.

At today's session, the student and I continued to review for his upcoming final exam. Again, we did practice problems on acids, bases, and molarity, as well as on equilibrium and LeChatelier's principle. We then reviewed physical properties of matter, watched a video on this, and had the student take 2 quizzes on it. He did very well at today's session. He is continuing to excel more and more at the material, and he's becoming more confident in his abilities.

Today, we reviewed molarity and molality briefly, then I taught the student about acids and bases. We covered the pH scale, the definitions of acids and bases, the strengths of acids and bases, and conjugate pairs. Also, I taught her how to write equations with acids and bases, and how to identify them in the equation. We also did practice questions in the book and she did pretty well! She just needs more practice with free response answering questions.

The student and I began this session in our typical fashion -- reviewing parts of speech, phrases and clauses, subjects and verbs, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to find that his recollection of these terms came more easily to him this time. After reviewing all our previously covered material, we touched on a couple grammatical concepts, including subject-verb agreement, verb tenses and the general notion of singular versus plural. We also spent a fair amount of time doing some exercises related to fragments, complete/ run-on sentences and comma splices. Then we got down to the real business of the session. The student will eventually be enrolling full-time in college, where students are commonly required to, in varying degrees of complexity, read text and spit back out a piece of writing related to it. I wanted to get him in the habit of doing this, so I directed him to read a passage from a book he's reading (on business management), and then write a summary. This also gave me an opportunity to gauge his critical thinking skills and forced him to write off-the-cuff. While he did need a fair amount of time to complete the assignment, he successfully crafted complete sentences that were free of egregious grammatical mistakes and which accurately captured the main idea of the passage. I was pleased, but made to sure to qualify it by pointing out that we have to engage in this kind of practice regularly to start building the kind of progress we want. He seemed to agree. Thanks to the holiday, we've got an extra session scheduled this week to really hammer home everything we've covered thus far. After that, I hope, we'll be able to move on to more sophisticated grammar rules and writing techniques, such as prose tightening, vocab choice and syntax variation.
