Session Summaries by LSAT Tutors

Today we mainly covered microbiology. We looked at viruses and forms of bacterial genetic recombination. We also talked about bacterial cell walls and Gram stains. Then we did a bunch of stoichiometry practice problems. I think the student will need more practice with stoichiometry. There are simply so many different types of problems that much practice is necessary to ensure she knows how to approach problem quickly. Her practice test went well on Friday and she spent longer on the biology passages like we talked about.

We worked through a sample test and talked about strategies for answering questions. Taking the questions one at a time, we diagnosed what the student knew already, what kinds of information she had at hand that would help her make educated guesses, and which questions she felt totally stumped on. For a few questions that seemed unfamiliar at first, we went back through them and I highlighted some clues that she actually was familiar with. This was the student's last session. I'm pretty confident that he'll be able to make a 4 or better on his GRE essays--his stated goal. Today we worked on how to make conclusions and introductions less like summaries. By talking about what constitutes categorical information and what works as more specific information, we are able to give readers multiple 'handles' on the essay which they may use to fit it into their existing knowledge.

The student has been working hard on Reading Comprehension since we last met, doing a practice section and completing the first half of the lessons in his prep book on the topic. We discussed some of the mistakes he'd made on that practice section and went back through the process carefully, clearing up a few lingering points of confusion. Then, we worked through several difficult passage sets from practice exams in the 50s. He's going to take a preptest this week and blind review it; then, we'll review the RC section together at our next meeting.
