How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

You might have the best private senior high school in mind for your child. It's likely that admission is not possible unless they ace the High School Placement Test. This nearly 300-question, 2.5-hour exam is notoriously challenging. It offers no standardized scoring, as many nationally administered tests do. Your child's language, math, quantitative, reading, and verbal skills will be tested, as well as their endurance. Being familiar with the content is as important as being comfortable with the test format. Test preparation includes doing practice exercises and shoring up any weaknesses. A tutor can effectively assist your child with this preparation. Varsity Tutors' educational directors will connect your student with an individual HSPT tutor in Montgomery County, PA, after considering all of their specific goals and needs. First, the tutor will identify any areas of confusion, and then, chances are they'll create a personalized study plan that targets these subjects as needed.

Unlike a classroom test prep program, your son or daughter's tutor has time to focus on them only. They can explain the study materials and identify useful tools. You may also track your student's progress along the way to be sure they are learning, and the lessons can be adapted to fit their pace and learning style. Alternative teaching methods can be applied where necessary. With this help, your student could possibly score near an 800, as their tutor has likely done.

Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

The student and I took a practice ACT tonight. The student recognizes that on Saturday, he needs to speed up on the reading and science sections, as well as trying to be conscious of not spending too much time staring at the same problem. Overall, he is much more confident and equipped for the ACT than he was a month ago.

Our second session went very well as we continued to go through the material that the student needs to know for the SAT. We covered algebra and functions today, along with improving sentences in the writing section and the essay. One thing I want to focus on as we go forward is getting her to be more confident in her abilities, as she tends to freeze up and then shut down when she reaches a challenging question. Once we break it down piece by piece she almost always gets to the right answer. She was very confident with the essay and improving sentences. Math should continue to be our focus for the most part.

The student and I went over reading passages of different types: two single short passages, one long single passage, and a long comparison passage. She applied the strategy of question labeling and elimination very well to all of the questions. We discussed how to identify answers for elimination for more abstract questions as well. After that, we practiced identifying sentence errors and sentence correction for the multiple choice writing section. She did very well on these as well.

During today's session we focused on final test taking strategies for the assessment. I had the student complete questions from all sections of the practice test. We revisited important strategies and worked to ensure accuracy during test taking. We discussed moving from section to section, and the use of test directions to refocus and orient thinking strategies. We also discussed strategies for checking work, narrowing down answer choices, including using estimation to choose best answers when she is unsure as well as time management during the test.

The student and I met for a session of ACT tutoring. She will be taking the test for the first time this weekend. In order to help her out, I tried to get a benchmark of where she is now by generating practice scores for the English and mathematics sections. The results were encouraging, she scored a 23 on English and a 26 on math, both improvements from where she originally was. We finished the session with science practice, and then I ended by giving her some tips of test strategy.

In today's lesson, the student and I first reviewed her homework assignment from last week. Then we did a vocabulary building exercise from a book that I checked out from the library. The student did that exercise very quickly and easily. Lastly, I taught her a strategy for reading-"trimming the fat".
