Today the student and I worked on linear algebra. I am enjoying working with her more and more. She really wants to nail this math down and works hard. I gave her a bunch of essay prompts to practice on before our next meeting on Wednesday.

Today we kept working on identifying and analyzing passages from 17th-19th century British literature. We discussed Langland, Marvell, Spenser, Sidney, and other poets. When she was practicing on her own, she noticed that she was having a hard time with some of the comprehension questions for poetry, so we focused on developing those skills today. I asked her questions about the meaning of specific lines and words in some of our sample poems and we worked on comprehending the grammar of Renaissance poetry. For next time, we're going to keep working on identifying/analyzing 17th-19th century poetry, and we're also going to practice identifying the grammatical structure of passages using both the college review book and examples I will put together.

Today we began our session by working through and proofreading an argument analysis essay that the student had prepared over the week. We focused specifically on comma usage in the sentences. While consciously looking for where commas might be needed, he did an excellent job of improving his essay. This essay was also very strong in its content and structure. We also began to go through the different forms the instructions for the argument analysis take. We did this by developing the possible points we could discuss in different essays. For homework, he is going to look through these different styles of argument analysis essays to become better acquainted with the different types.

The student and I spent today reviewing homework essays before working on final timing tactics for her Issue Task essay. Her timed homework essays have shown marked grammatical and structural improvement over the past month, displaying increasingly rare pronoun and verb issues. At this point, her Argument Task has reached a clarity and muscularity that she is still developing in the Issue Task. We spent the second hour working on timing tactics and test-day contingencies for the Issue Task. Moving forward, I have asked her to regulate her self-timing as strictly as possible in preparation for her upcoming test.

The student's writing is progressing very well. In particular, his essays have gotten very clear and easy to understand, while the ideas are still complex. If I were grading them for the GRE, I would be surprised if he achieved less than a 4. He says that he has become much more comfortable with the time limit, and knows what sort of pacing he needs in order to get his ideas across. His tangential ideas have been clipped more appropriately than in the past, and his transitions are much better. If he is able to get comfortable enough with the time limit and logical progression, he may be able to bring the figurative language back and move into the realm of 5's.

The student took a practice exam this past week, and the results continue to be promising. In the logic games he attempted, he did very well. We analyzed his sketches from these games then went on to do a pair of practice games together from PrepTest 7. He's going to take a new practice exam this week in anticipation of our meeting next week.
