The student got all his of spelling quiz words right and was very happy about that. Next, we read the final chapters of his "Mummies" book, which he enjoyed immensely. He got all the chapter question correct. We will move on to book 4 in the series, "Pirates Past Noon." This series is a good fit for the student. To finish for the day, I assigned him the next five words from the "100 Most Misspelled" list, and reviewed with him how he should study: write each word five times and repeat each letter out loud as he writes, then repeat the word when he has written all its letters.

Using the student's History assignment as an exercise, in this session we focused on how to write an argumentative essay, which requires setting up a debate and lobbying for one side. Essays of this sort are one of the hardest for writers to master, since the debatable issue at hand has no right or wrong position, forcing the writer to come up with lines of evidence that can persuade their audience that their stance is most sound. He and I worked mostly on getting away from the "book report" style of writing that he has up until only been asked to do. This is no easy transition, for it requires a completely different way of looking at and using supporting data in a paper. I worked with him on how to "use" data effectively as a means of supporting his position rather than on summarizing and covering all of the information from his textbook. After making this distinction, he and I mapped out his entire paper by creating an annotated outline. By the end of the session he was feeling confident about the assignment!
