The student and I worked through a test review together, and she had few questions about the material. We talked about overall study techniques, but at this point she just needs to memorize the unit circle. Once those values are at her fingertips, she tends to have little to no difficulties.

The student and I worked on studying for her math quiz she has coming up. Her quiz consisted of factoring quadratics in the form ax^2+bx+c where a>=1. I taught her how to use an "X" to factor the a=1 binomials and a different method when a does not equal 1. We also did some foiling with perfect square and regular binomials. There were some definitions as well, such as what exactly are quadratics and such. Some of the Pythagorean theorem was in the lesson as well, which she did with ease now doing so well with factoring. There was also some solving the quadratic equations as well, in the typical sense of using the zero product property as well as things like x^2+5=30, where you just have to take the square root of both sides at the end. She seemed to have no problem with the beginning of this chapter at all.

I met the student today and spoke with her parents about their goals for her over the next several weeks. We discussed her strengths and weaknesses, and the areas which they would like me to work on with her (refreshing math skills from earlier years, practicing test-taking strategies, using time effectively). Then she and I worked on a math section from her test practice book. She talked through each problem so I could see her approach and her strategies, and when she was faced with difficulty we talked about how to best solve it or what she could do to make the problem more manageable (eliminating obviously wrong answers, "plugging in" or skipping and coming back to it with fresh eyes).

My session with the student focused on solving random math problem sets mostly utilizing subtraction and multiplication. I knew from previous conversations with her mother that she found speed drills to be the most challenging, therefore we played an online game where she had to solve multiplication problems with time restrictions but presented in a fun, kid-friendly and interactive manner. She enjoyed this and I noticed that while she was trying not to get any strikes in the game, she was becoming quicker at solving multiplications mentally. In upcoming sessions, we will continue to do drills in order to build up her confidence and speed in solving basic math problems.

We worked on long division and subtraction with larger numbers and borrowing. Long division is a new concept for the student, so we reviewed the steps and practiced. I noticed that he was struggling a little with borrowing during subtraction. We talked about how to show and check our work. We also went over Social Studies academic vocabulary like "population density" and "pollution." We built some background knowledge for his upcoming unit by discussing the effects of population on our surroundings. We examined different regions with Google Earth. We reviewed short a and short e spelling words. We ended with some reading aloud together.
