Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This afternoon the student and I began editing an outline for a literature response paper and she began constructing her rough draft. She is grappling with a response that is difficult to express, but she did an excellent job hanging in there during the session. I tried a combination of Socratic method and showing her potential idea construction techniques... this approach seemed to work well. Even though this approach is a bit time consuming, I think it best helps to make sure that it is her voice shining through and that the finished product is uniquely hers."
"The student and I worked on the structure of his research paper. There were some rough spots in the introductory paragraph, but we worked hard to restructure it. During our session, I had him verbally tell me the information he has found in his paper since he was having problems with wording. This helped him with writing. He is to send me a rough draft of his paper by Tuesday. He did a great job."
"I supervised the student on getting her homework in order for the week. We also reviewed her math for this week. She now understands the way it is done. We also studied for her English test that is on Thursday."
"The student worked through most of a pair of worksheets asking her to balance chemical reaction equations and to identify the different types of reactions. She demonstrates proficient understanding of the material, being able to solve problems of this type quickly, correctly, in her head, and to accurately explain why a result is as it is and the deductive process she undertook. Finally, we investigated what some of the trouble she has in test-taking situations. We discussed plans for our next meeting, and how we will go about preparing study materials for her."
"Today I assisted the student as he completed social studies homework on the Civil War. He used his textbook in which he found key details about teacher chosen events and concepts important to the Civil War. I augmented his textbook info with Google searches and we used the index to pinpoint specific information relevant to the homework questions. Social studies is his favorite subject and it showed. He had great interest and lots of background knowledge; he was very focused and on task."
"Today, we focused on preparing for her Humanities exam the following day. One portion of the exam was a five-paragraph essay, and the students were allowed to bring in one 4x6 index card with notes for their essay. She had already begun an outline for her essay, and together we completed it. Her teacher had given the class 13 images to identify on the exam, so we then worked on explaining the context of the images. Finally, we reviewed some of the terms that she needed to know for her exam."
