"During our two hour session, the student and I discussed the content of the SSAT Verbal and Critical reading sections. Due to her difficulty with vocabulary, we spent the first hour discussing the verbal section. We first talked about strategies that would make this section easier for her (i.e. eliminate what you know is wrong, and know when to skip). Next, we covered the synonym and analogy sections. For each section, I first read through the question, and spoke my thought process out for her. On the next several questions, I had her do the same. If she appeared to be stuck on a particular question, I would help her make adjustments. To help with her vocab, I gave her a sheet of 75 Vocabulary words for her too study. For the next half an hour, the student and I worked on the Critical Reading portion of the exam. There was not much adjusting for me to make in this section because of her comfort with the material. I talked with her about how necessary it is for her to underline as she reads (to help with information retrieval). For this part of the test, I simply recommended continuing to get herself comfortable with the types of questions that this section will contain. For the final half an hour, the student and I worked on the essay writing section of the test. For this part, I simply explained the format, and the expectations of the test. Next, I had her write an introduction for the two sample questions I brought with me, and had her outline the remainder of her essay."
"I gave a diagnostic of practice questions for each section along with a writing sample. The student's writing sample displays a highly creative thought process. He also shows a strong grasp of the supplied math concepts as well as reading comprehension. I left him with a list of unfamiliar words to define, and I will quiz him on the words at our next session."
"We graded the student's practice SSAT that she took over the weekend. She did it in two sessions. She did very well on the first session material, particularly showing strong performance on the math section. I talked to her about how to pace herself on the test and how to deal with tension fatigue, since it can have a pretty strong impact on her scores."
