Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered sentence completion and Numbers & Operations. For sentence completion, we reviewed the problems I had assigned. The student and I went over both basic and advanced strategy (using knowledge of common prefix meanings like "eu" = good to help suss out word meaning and Romance language cognates like facile meaning "too EASILY accomplished" and the student knowing that facil means "easy" in Spanish). With Numbers & Operations, we focused on how to determine the nth term in a sequence even if you can't remember the formula, how to translate words into algebraic expressions, how to use the same method used to create equivalent fractions to change the way your answer looks so that it's obvious that it's one of the actual answer choices in a different form, how to do complex counting problems by determining how many different positions one object can take in the permutation and then multiplying that number by the number of remaining objects factorialized, (n-1)!. I asked the student to do one of the practice quizzes in the Numbers & Operations packet and 5 pages of Sentence Completion (focusing on applying basic SAT strategy, so no time constraints). I should also note that the student looked up the meanings of the words she didn't know from the first sentence completion assignment on her own without any suggestions from me, displaying very good initiative."
"Reading (Thesis and Supporting Examples; Function); Grammar (Subject and Verb Agreement); and Math (Ratios, Percents, Proportions) Assigned: Next practice test and index cards for words"
"We went through flashcards of SAT math questions, focusing specifically on algebra this session. There were some issues with recall of material, though as we went through it her confidence clearly grew. I am going to send some practice problems tonight so that we can tailor the next session more closely to her needs."
