Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had written a couple of papers, which we looked at together for grammar, citations, and clarity. The first piece was about some theoretical literature, and the second was a reflection paper on a video screened in class. We talked about verb consistency - use present tense if possible to discuss literature - and sentence structure - among other grammar and style points. We worked for a bit on just making sure her point came across in the theory piece - it's hard to distill theory into a short paper, so we focused on selecting just the right amount of information and figuring out how to include enough information to contextualize and make legible the somewhat opaque terminology from the book she's writing about. Overall, her writing is getting better and more sophisticated."
"Today we reviewed the student's response assignment for Things Fall Apart. I provided him with some editorial suggestions, and we went through the piece line by line together. The student was very attentive and involved. As grammatical issues or corrections came up, I gave the student some advice about comma usage, citation, and the use of active versus passive voice. We also covered some citation rules. We talked briefly at the end of the session about his next assignment and scheduled an appointment for Sunday."
"Student 1: We went over a paper he had written from a prompt given to him last week. He did a very nice job with the paper, so we had time to discuss when to use a semicolon as he had stated he had a hard time knowing when to use one. Student 2: We went over an essay she had written based on a prompt given to her last week. We talked about organizing paragraphs, which is what I see as her biggest challenge in writing. She has been given an assignment for next week to expand her essay. She will write two paragraphs based on a chart I gave her today."
