Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I felt that we had an excellent session. We spent most of the time discussing the thesis statement -- what it is and what it is not. We practiced creating statements of facts vs. statements of opinion."
"The student is taking a college course on English and feels that she could be more confident in writing. So, to begin the session, we started with a brief Grammar Lecture featuring identifying the subject, verb, and objects (both direct and indirect) of a sentence, and how those relate to different classes of pronouns. Once we could identify those key elements, we began to correct sentences, learning how to spot and fix common writing errors. I then had the student begin with a short 5 paragraph persuasive essay prompt."
"We went over the syllabus for the student's class and what the assignments will be for this semester. We looked through the chapter that she will be required to summarize and present in class, and also discussed the play that she will be presenting with her group. The extra practice she was left with at the end is to read the chapter and the plays for the class."
"The student is still working on his Reading project. He completed four more diary entries for the project and revised 2 others. He has an excellent cover for his representation of Sam. We will review it tomorrow."
"The student and I went over two reading comprehension passages with an emphasis on humanities. We focused on close reading and understanding passage development and vocabulary. He also completed his algebra II homework on trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, and tangent) and word problems involving trigonometric functions."
"We started with a variation of "Spot It," then continued to read the Tomie dePaola book we've been reading for the past few sessions, stopping to discuss tricky vocab words. We finished the session with one of her favorite activities, creating pairs of flashcards, with a word on one card and picture on the other, then playing Go Fish."
