Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session online. We started with the most important --- what is a thesis statement? We talked about the difference between a topic sentence and a thesis statement. We discussed what it means to take a stand/ position rather than describe the obvious (topic sentence). We talked about what the elements/aspects necessary to write a standard college level: structure, grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, critical thinking and one's audience. For homework, the student is to write 5 thesis statements, 2 thesis statements w/ 3 sub-thesis statement and one full 5 paragraph essay outline."
"This session was spent working on a short-turnaround essay on the topic of risk taking. Two supporting points with examples were developed and then the essay itself was written. I recommended to the student that she review the final product for any errors in grammar or punctuation. I also reviewed the final draft of an essay we worked on in a previous session. Moving forward I want to focus on a simplification of writing style in terms of word choice and sentence structure. Overall paper and paragraph structure is good."
"The student sent me a new version of her essay, which I reviewed before we met. I gave her some feedback on the introduction and minor word choice and sentence structure issues. We also discussed ways to add to the conclusion and particular paragraphs directed at specific schools. We will meet again on Saturday at 5 pm."
"The student began the session by showing me a pair of new story ideas. Together we resolved to spend one hour on the Tail 2, and another on developing one of her ideas. Her writing is continuing to develop. When we talked about the new story, we spent a lot of time brainstorming ideas and fleshing out the characters and scenario. I tried to encourage her to create a strong central conflict."
"Since he finished the 2nd grade reading level comprehension book last session, I moved up to the 3rd grade level book. The student was highly motivated and completed what was asked of him very diligently. In addition to the reading of the short stories and answering some question based on the stories, there was also a crossword puzzle associated. The crossword puzzle seemed to be what he liked the most. He has come a long way, and I am happy to see the significant progress since our very first session."
"Today's session continued the work to improving the student's spelling ability. We covered new words and I provided him an opportunity to create more words on his own. He did well to come up with several new words he had not spelled before in tutoring session. His enthusiasm remains strong. I will continue to motivate his participation by utilizing engaging and fun incentives - especially the tablet reading app, which he greatly enjoys - in order to ensure he remains on task. Lastly, he did a great job writing today with well-written letters."
