Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered vesicular trafficking and cell organelles. The student sent me a list of learning objectives, which we will use to guide our sessions together in the future. I started to teach her about terms that come up frequently in biology, which should help her to get through reading assignments more efficiently. It was a very productive session."
"The student was reviewing for her final during this session, so my goal was to help her understand anything she was struggling with at this time. I don't want her to feel overwhelmed as she starts her new college classes, so I encouraged her to take her final sooner rather than later. The student and I spent our last session working on a list of things she wasn't totally comfortable on, She had a rough idea about which chapters she was weaker in, but she wasn't at the point where she could target specific topics to study in greater depth. That in mind, I directed our attention to photosynthesis, cellular respiration, mitosis and meiosis, which I've found stumps many students (myself included!). This was a lot of material to go over in a relatively short period of time, but the student asked a lot of good questions and, as we worked together to answer them, I think she gained a richer understanding of the material and is in a better place for the test than she was before."
"We covered DNA, RNA and proteins. This was in preparation for an upcoming quiz. I think that the student is more than prepared."
"Today we went over the specific differences between meiosis and mitosis, and described in detail what occurs during each step of the cell cycle. Meiosis was a bit more challenging, but by the end of the session I think that the student had a better understanding of the steps (especially interphase, crossover, and the separation of tetrads and chromatids occurs). I will email him with a diagram that goes over these processes and a short explanation. He also shared which topics in algebra II have been the most challenging for him, and I'll look over these in more detail for tomorrow's session."
"The student has a test tomorrow so we reviewed areas that he was worried about. The topics we covered included alternation of generations, the circulatory system, the nervous system, and reproduction. He initially seemed a little uncertain of how the various components and life cycle stages fit with each other in context, so I made sure to emphasize their connections with each other and their overall functions. As we covered the material, I made sure to ask him questions to evaluate and reinforce his understanding, and he made excellent progress. For the rest of the evening I suggested that he review the definitions and label the various components of the systems, then write out and explain what each part does."
"We covered DNA replication, translation, and transcription. We touched on a little about meiosis. I spent some time helping the student figure out better ways to study, since she's been out of school for a while."
