Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, the student and I first worked on synonyms. He did a good job overall with the words that we went over. I used some of the words that he was unsure about in sentences, and he did a good job extrapolating from the context to find the meaning of the word and its synonym. We also practiced identifying word roots for certain words. He was able to identify prefixes and suffixes like -ify, con-, and -able, and we talked about how he could shorten a complex word by removing these prefixes to better understand its meaning. We also talked about the meaning of less common word roots like -haere-, -form-, and -pac-. Then, we moved on to work on sentence completions. We worked on some sentences that were slightly harder than the ones we have done before. In these sentences, he did well in thinking of his own word to fill in the blank based on the clue in the sentence. When we went through and defined all of the answer choices, he could find the right answer. We also worked on two reading passages. He understood the passages well, as shown by his summary of each one, and did a good job looking back in each passage to find his answers. He should always make sure that he is looking back in the correct place in the passage. Finally, we went over his practice essay and talked about what he did well (introducing his topic, concluding his essay, and answering the question by providing specific details) and what he could continue to improve on (keeping a formal tone, using punctuation to show pauses in a sentence, and being even more descriptive). He will write another practice essay for our next session."
"Today we focused primarily on language and verbal elements of the ISEE. We also took time to develop a potential essay for the student. He continues to excel in his verbal studies and definitions. He has ongoing definitions assigned."
"We focused on ISEE prep today, taking a practice test and beginning to go over questions answered incorrectly. This will give us plenty to work on when there is no homework to be done."
