Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I started today with a book that she is reading for school and which they have almost finished reading, Treasure Island. We read the whole chapter out loud, explaining each action. We went on to talk about each chapter afterwards. We read part of the last two chapters of the book that they have not read in class. We discussed Long John Silver and Jim. She says that they will have to write a persuasion essay in a week or two. We discussed which aspects of the novel could be the subject of persuasion. For next week, she has to write an essay on Silver and whether he is a good person or a bad person. I instructed her to make sure she includes a "naysayer," the argument that is the strongest against her own. We discussed chapters 13-17 of Sense and Sensibility. She gave me her essay of the comparison and contrast of Elinor and Marianne. For next week, she is to read chapters 18-22."
"The student and I reviewed his upcoming College English and Writing class, all of his upcoming assignments, and writing assignments, some of which he had already started. The student wrote some very good Issue Proposals and Persuasive papers, which are part of his overall assignments. We then went over some organizational skills related to his Public Speaking and other classwork, as budgeting and planning his time is a weakness, according to his Dad. This was an excellent first session. He is very talented."
"Student 1- We went over a paper that he had written. Mostly we talked about being clear and concise and writing introduction and conclusion sentences. Student 2- We talked about introductions and conclusions."
"The student did very well. We worked on reading aloud for fluency and answering questions with writing sentences instead of multiple choice. She used different strategies to answer the questions. The main strategy she used was restating the question in her answer. She also worked on editing her writing so it made sense. We also did a fluency reading. She read 50 words in a minute."
"The student did well this session. She knows 80% of her vocabulary cards (60 cards) really well. We did various activities with her vocabulary words, like play hangman and create stories using a few of the words. She also watched an ESL clip on how to speak about food and quantities of food, and answered questions. For the last ten minutes, we watched another fun video clip, and she answered questions that tested comprehension. She did well."
"The student did well today. We made it through all the questions assigned and he did well with the answers and understood what he read. As always, he was a pleasure to work with and wants to continue our progress forward."
