Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was my first meeting with this student. We worked on an essay as well as vocab words. He is going to take a practice SAT test to see where we need to focus our studies on. He will continue studying vocab words before our next session."
"-We focused mainly on the reading and writing sections of the SAT, although we briefly covered a couple of math questions as well. -The student developed a better understanding of sentence structure and syntax as the session went on."
"The student and I began by talking about the ACT in general. She said that she didn't know much about it - just that it was similar to the SAT - so I gave a brief overview of the ACT's four sections. We then started by working on a passage from the English section. She did well with most of the questions on grammar and punctuation, and on questions about the passage as a whole. She struggled slightly more with questions about making stylistic choices such as improving precision and choosing the phrase which would best give a certain connotation. Once she realized what concept a given question was testing, she was usually able to find the right answer quickly. We will continue working on these stylistic type questions to give her more familiarity with this question type. She and I then moved on to the science section. We worked on two passages - one involving reading charts and graphs, and the other on comparing two scientists' perspectives. She seemed to become more sure of herself after she saw that the majority of the questions on the science section rely only on being able to read charts and analyze passages, rather than on having direct knowledge of science facts. For the last part of the session, she and I worked on math. She did well in setting up proportions, working with percentages, and manipulating algebraic expressions."
