"We went through his homework, step by step, explaining core concepts over potential and kinetic energy. He is to send me his next home work assignment as soon as he gets it, as well as write out all the equations and the general form of the problems for that chapter."
"The student and I worked on decimal-to-hexadecimal conversions. He had a hard time seeing place value in different base systems (i.e.. 16^2, 16^1, 16^0) as well as working with the remainder rather than the fractional equivalents (i.e., .5 rather than a remainder of 8)."
"In this session, we focused on the student's physical science course, reading through a chapter about chemical bonds. There was a lot of overlap between this chapter and the previous chapter on the periodic table, especially since I had used bonding as a way to better explain many of the concepts previously introduced. Because of this, many, of the topics we discussed today were a review from our previous science session. Some key points were the use of chemical formulas, electron dot diagrams, and the difference between covalent and ionic bonds. One new piece of information we spent a bit of time dissecting was the idea of polarity. The student better understood it after we went through a few examples using illustrations in the book."
"We worked through some practice problems on energy conservation to help the student better understand the unit her class is currently covering. She understands the concepts involved with different kinds of energy and can set up the needed equations to solve problems, but she struggles to manipulate those equations successfully. To improve this, we worked through the algebra involved with each problem step by step, confirming how each step affected the equation before moving on. I will make improving this area of her skills a goal in our upcoming sessions."
"We wrote code to perform support vector machines classification (using libsvm), called from within Matlab, using either a linear as well as Gaussian kernel. We tested it on a sample dataset provided as part of the student's class assignment."
