Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on the basic ways of organizing a set of numbers (stemleaf plot, split stemleaf plot, histograms, frequency tables, and backtoback stemleaf plots). After explaining new material and helping her complete her homework, she seemed to have no difficulties with understanding the material, whatsoever."
"For our first session the student and I reviewed a precalc quiz covering polynomial reduction and simplification. She didn't require much help, she just needed some help with certain steps that she may not have known how to do given that her classes are only 30 min long. With some techniques I showed her she seemed much more confident. On physics we reviewed simple trig applications to physics, forces and torque. Most questions were not difficult for her with the exception of the last one requiring minor trig functions. But with time and practice she shouldn't have any problems."
"We focused on Science questions. We practiced reading carefully, using key words, not over thinking questions, and interpreting data."
"Went over Science and Math sections in depth again with the student. Spent some time going over what he completed, and emphasized the use of a watch to help work on timing for himself."
"The student and I worked on English, Math, and Reading. English, as usual, was quite solid. Math went well too no systematic issues. Pacing continues to be pretty good, and most of his mistakes came after doing all the work for a problem correctly, then making a "silly" mistake, e.g. choosing "B" when he meant "C." Reading continues to gradually get better. Next week, if he has had the time to do a practice essay sometime during the week, we will look at that."
"We went over more topics for his upcoming final. We reviewed the sum, double angle, and half angle identities of sine, cosine, and tangent. We also went over finding the four smallest angles with a given value of sine, cosine, or tangent."
"The student and I covered the following topics: higher degree polynomials, trigonometric functions and graphs, and cofunctions. The student said he would review them this weekend. We will cover the remaining topics on Monday."
"Session 1: During our first meeting, we went over the information that the student already knew, as I needed to know where she was in her learning. We went over vocabulary words in categories such as: colors, family members, and fruit.
Session 2: During our second meeting, we started on basic Chinese sentence structures and greetings. She was beginning to understand the lesson by the end. We will continue this lesson for the next few weeks."

"We discussed the student's first research paper and picked a topic, video games and safety. We researched the library's research tools and databases and found helpful sites and potential articles. We outlined all the elements of the argument paper and set goals for a rough draft for next Thursday when I will come back and look over the draft and discuss the work before he does a final draft."
"I had the student finish the practice test by completing the writing sample. After that, we added "adversary," "barricade," "muster," "outlandish," and "impending" to her vocabulary cards.
For the reading section of the test, we went over how to infer meaning of a word based on contextual clues and how to look for linking words.
For math, we reviewed how to convert among fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios. We also spent time on how to convert a story problem into a math equation and how to solve those equations."

"Today we made corrections to the test she took. We also reviewed her lab that is due on Tuesday. She has her 9 weeks exam coming up and we will need to spend some time reviewing electrochemistry."
"During the last session with the student, we covered homework questions that had been assigned by her teacher. We first went through the underlying concepts and selectively addressed the questions that she had trouble with. She was able to successfully complete most of the questions successfully."
