Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we covered Organic Chemistry. We went over reactions involving alkynes, aromatic compounds, and alcohols. We discussed mechanisms for important reactions and I told the student which reactions can simply be memorized using note cards. Next session, we will begin going over some passages from Organic Chemistry so she understands how to apply the numerous reactions and Organic Chemistry concepts."
"The student made a LOT of progress this session. We reviewed both 5.1 and 5.2 of her algebra book in preparation for her upcoming quiz this Friday. The topics we covered included adding, multiplying and dividing exponential terms as well as beginning to understand polynomial expressions. We also began to review her psychology text book and I gave her an assignment to complete for our meeting on Thursday. She was to write one or two sentences summarizing each topic heading for pages 125-140 (but ideally through 150). Overall, the student has a good grasp on the algebra we reviewed- she understands concepts when they are explained with pictures and metaphors."
"Learned the theory behind tangent lines/slopes/derivatives. Practiced graphing derivatives and functions from derivatives, as well as solving for the derivative of various functions. Also worked on limits."
"The student is very bright -- we mainly covered English today, and the breakdown of questions shows that she is mainly missing detail questions (which sentence should be added, what would the paragraph be missing if the sentence was removed, etc.). We'll also want to work on her timing, as she indicated she was tight on time with some of the sections. We covered math as well, and I think with this she'll just need some practice with understanding the way the questions are worded. Next time we'll continue working on math. Since we aren't meeting until 2 weekends from now, I've asked that she take a full practice test (not to include the English section we completed today) and grade it so that next time we can focus on types of questions she's missing."
"Worked on vocab and test strategy. The student will be taking his first full practice test this week, so I helped prepare him for what to expect. We focused specifically on the short passages, since the student has difficulty with the level of specificity present in the short passages."
"I gave some thinking and study techniques such as simplicity and associations. We then talked about the rules on how to plot points in a coordinate plane and some basic characteristics of a graph. We discussed how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers of the same and opposite signs. We discussed y=mx+b and its importance as well as how to solve for a system of equations!"
"Today was working through a review of some things for his big test next week. He's extremely bright and seems to get the problems pretty quickly when I explain it to him."
"We started the student's mock SAT today. I timed her on two math sections, a critical reading, and a writing section (each 25 mins.) On Sunday we will finish the remaining sections and I will time her on them as well. At the end we will review and practice the ones that she got incorrect/omitted."
"Worked with the student on study guide for upcoming Physics test. Worked through practice problems on F=ma, friction, normal force, and force balance. He made good progress on these areas. I encouraged him to review the work we had done before his test and to include some of the problems on the notecards he was allowed for his test."
"The student is showing improvement and remembering her vocabulary better. She needs more practice with interrogative words, a few of her numbers, family members, and time. She is also doing better with her verb conjugating."
"The student began the session by reviewing the writers checklist. He composed the conclusion to his essay. We reviewed the proof reading guide to utilize in the next session when making corrections to the rough draft. He ended the session by doing a few pages of handwriting practice. His attitude was excellent and he put forth great effort."
"We covered factoring, FOIL, and the quadratic equation. We also worked on problems that reviewed concepts such as exponents, geometry, and coordinate geometry. The student is progressing in her application of the laws of exponents and in combining like terms. I will work with her more on setting up equations and applying geometry formulas to word problems. I gave her a PDF of 60 ACT math practice problems to work on this week."
