Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Last night, the student and I reviewed her essay due on Monday. She was told to rewrite her introduction and conclusion, so we reviewed the teacher's notes and did it. Then it was necessary to read through the whole essay out loud, because this is a trick to help her correct her grammar. We talked about the distinction between active and passive voice in her writing, and also when to use plural and singular nouns. It was very helpful to see her correct her own mistakes. She will be emailing sections of her paper to her teacher for a brief review and then we will meet again on Saturday, one more time, before it is due."
"In today's session, the student and I worked on her calculus homework over limits. She had a few questions, but she worked relatively independently. Overall, progress was good. She should be well prepared for her quiz tomorrow."
"Worked on editing the student's Disney paper and adding to some sections. For next week she is going to do some more research and get her citations in order. We will also begin working on her English paper rewrite, focusing on word choice, grammar, and correct citation."
"The student's accuracy has increased in math. I would like her to practice more and focus on not overlooking any words in the problems and not making any calculation mistakes. For science, we will begin to practice passage by passage during the lessons. For example, I will give her about five minutes and she will complete one single passage out of seven total in a science section. I believe this will help her master the micro part of timing, which will translate to the macro, overall, timing. Also, time seems to be the only factor affecting her performance. She is able to understand and correctly answer every single problem on the science test if given enough time."
"Today's session included a review of all of chapter 3, which focused on co-ordinate geometry, the slope of a line, and the equations of a line (both slope-intercept form and point-slope form). We went through the chapter test to ensure that the student has a firm handle on each of the above topics and how to apply these principles to word problems. We also went through her geometry homework, working primarily with triangles (Pythagorean theorem, interior & exterior angle measures). This section also tested the student's ability to break different shapes (squares, rectangles) into right triangles in order to apply triangle rules to find answers. She struggled a bit with this, but I think she'll grow more comfortable with additional practice."
"The student and I wrapped up our last session working on math word problems about percentages and pages in his English workbook about adverbs. He's in good shape for both. Hurray for high school and calculators!"
"We had our final review session for the exam today, since the exam is tomorrow. First I gave the student a review sheet I wrote with some questions, along with the different types of systems (digestion, circulatory, etc.). He then asked me questions about some of the topics we reviewed last time."
"I worked with the student on reviewing a homework assignment focused on the challenges of President Washington's term. She did a great job at extracting key information, and we spent time working on a critical thinking question. I then reviewed key information from the section of the textbook she is working on in school."
"For a change, the student does not have a test this week, but he has been struggling with the new unit covering extensions of the Pythagorean Theorem. The theorem itself gives him no trouble, so we focused on explaining and practicing the later results pertaining to right-triangle altitudes, Pythagorean triples, and special triangles."
"This session went really well. We focused on just doing practice problems to study for the student's exam. I think she really benefited from this session. We did a lot of problems relating to Red-Ox reactions. Overall this session went well."
"I met with the first student for an hour and a half going over old homework, doing corrections as well as planning for his test tomorrow. He takes half of it tomorrow, then the rest on Tuesday, so we'll meet again Monday for another review. Went over some pre-calc concepts with the second student that she had done before we started pre-calc and she understood it a lot better now."
"During this tutoring session I worked on pre-primer sight words. The student was able to recite most of the pre-primer words. I also did a review of kindergarten language arts skills. Beginning, ending consonant sounds. Also worked on vowel sounds. This was a great tutoring session."
