Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had done a full science test on her own, so we went over it first. I had her do some more sections on her own, timed, and we did some together, going over each question she had trouble with along the way. She seemed to struggle most with the complicated science graphs and the questions with a lot of scientific wording, while she did best with the longer passages with less graphs. By the end, though, I could tell that the student had improved. I asked her to do a full math test before our next session."
"We began with a review of the items she missed in her last verbal practice test in the review book. She'd only missed four questions and was quick to understand why the correct answers were what they were. We moved on to a critique of her rewrite of an essay from prior to her vacation. This was version three. She'd addressed all the comments from version two and had managed to create a very nice flow of her arguments, as well as use transitions effectively, and select a better word choice. To further refine her writing, she still needs to do more with appropriate word choice and improve conclusions. We next spent some time on the aspects that would give the essay more finesse. The student was receptive, but I decided not to ask her to do a version four; she will, instead, write on different topic for our next session. To finish, she worked on editing exercises that I'd brought, and we then compared her changes with mine."
"The student and I worked through the ACT Critical Reading and Science sections today. We talked about reading comprehension and memory retention strategies, as well as answer tactics. We then moved on to the science, where we talked about graph reading, "dueling scientist" passages, and timing issues. I asked him to go over his last practice test again and bring questions and concerns into me for our next meeting. Overall, we had a good session and I am looking forward to meeting with him again on Thursday."
