Mississippi, MS Statistics tutoring
The student and I dove deeply into his understanding of adding and subtracting negative numbers today. He was able to complete the problems mentally, but was sometimes making mistakes. We developed a method of writing down each problem and creating a number line to ensure that he always gets the right answer. We also spent some time working on homework problems that have combining like terms, and some more challenging problems that will lead to proportional reasoning. Finally, we set up an online account for him to gain some more diagnostic information and for use in the future as extra practice.

The student and I finished reviewing the practice test. That was three-word problems that were solving for 2 variables. He was able to do the last one without any help and the first two with some help. We also looked at solving for domain and range, linear equations, vertical line test, and determining a function from points. He seemed to pick up on concepts very quickly. The main strategy was continuing to work problems and reviewing homework.

The student and I finished the homework for Chapter 9 and began working on Chapter 12. For Chapter 9, we focused on solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula, simplifying positive and negative square roots, simplifying fractions by factoring out what the numerator and denominator have in common, and complex numbers. For Chapter 12, we worked on writing an equation of a circle using the center and radius or using the center and a point on the circle. We also graphed the circle equations.

The student and I finished up proportions, percents, and word problems and went over some more geometry to ground her in the basics for her test this weekend. She did very well, and has good retention of most geometric principles.

The student and I first worked through her biology reading worksheet on passive and active transport. The readings were very easy for her, and we worked on using the strategy of reading the questions first, and then going through and reading the text. This helped save time, since she already knew exactly what she was looking for. We worked on algebra for the rest of our session, going over her class notes and finishing up the homework for tomorrow. She is doing really well with y=mx+b format for linear equations, and she is able to very easily manipulate equations and create new equations by picking out information from word problems. The only thing she was struggling with was how to find the x-intercepts. In y=mx+b form, the y-intercept is already given as b, but the x-intercept needs to be solved for. We practiced setting y equal to 0 and solving for x, and she seemed to gain a lot of confidence from it.

The student and I focused on adding/subtracting with fractions, and also on word problems, which he is very enthusiastic about, and became even stronger at as we practiced. I've noticed that he's very strong at identifying what he wants and needs to work on. Student two and I met and practiced dividing large numbers with decimals. Despite some slight struggles with remembering the foundation for why we put certain numbers on certain sides with long division, she did excellently.
