The student and I covered writing equations from patterns in tables of values for in and out. We worked on strategies for discovering the pattern and how to check if the pattern is correct. We also covered writing an equation from a word problem and careful reading of word problems. The student continues to struggle with positive and negatives in multiplication/division, and I continue to review to concept with him every session. We did a quick review of brain anatomy for his science class and discussed his progress on a project covering the function of the visual system. He continues to be eager to learn and work with me.

The student and I did a quick review of her area/perimeter homework, and then we focused on the Pythagorean theorem. She is doing a great job of recognizing Pythagorean triples (3-4-5, 5-12-13, etc.) and is also able to quickly solve Pythag problems. Sometimes she forgets that she can reduce a square root. She is able to solve problems when she has a model in front of her, but struggles sometimes with setting up her problem on her own. For homework, she is going to do Pythag problem work.

The student and I did a review of polynomial expansion and distributive property. He needed help a bit with polynomial expansion, so I told him to draw arrows to keep track of each factor, and he did much better after that. We also did proportional reasoning, rates, and word problems dealing with such.

The student and I did both Algebra 2 and geometry Monday night. He is very good at breaking down problems and understanding what the problem is asking, which is the uphill battle in math. Once we get down his terminology and proper mathematical formatting, he should thrive and excel in both of these classes.
