"During this session, the student and I worked through mitosis and meiosis in detail. I recommended she focus on trying to draw out the individual steps of each when she was studying on her own. We also worked on some basic genetics, including Punnett squares, dominance, and some probability."
"Completed packet on thermochemistry. Discussed chemistry behind temperature changes vs phase changes. Also discussed elementary reactions and heat of formations. The student had a better understanding of the principles at work by the end of the session."
"We covered solution stoichiometry and acid-base neutralization. This covered a lot about converting between grams, moles, and molarity and revisited the concept of molarity further. The student did very well and continues to have a great attitude and persistence in trying to understand concepts. We discussed the test-taking strategies that are helpful for all of chemistry: writing units always, writing what you are given in the question and what you are trying to figure out, and writing the equation you will use most often (in the case of tomorrow's quiz, molarity = moles of solute/ liters of solution)."
"We went through a review of the cell cycle by using the multiple choice questions on the whiteboard. We then moved into cancer cell cycles and their characteristics, and then worked our way through components of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. The student is continuing to do really well with all the material and continues to stay on top of the material. She seems more at ease with the material and her attitude is always positive."
"We covered chemistry-alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and nomenclature. The student was proactive about his learning. He scored 100% on the practice questions."
"Today we worked through about 1/3 of a practice exam and did several drills relating to molar calculations. The student is having some trouble differentiating between moles, molecular weight, and reaction ratios. He has a good attitude towards the material. We discussed that next week we will spend about half the time working further on a practice exam and about half the time reviewing basic concepts (such as the molecular calculations referenced earlier)."
