Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I read new, longer-paragraph books together. He did well identifying his vocabulary words in the text and sounding out words he was unfamiliar with. We also did reading-comprehension practice from his workbook and reviewed past-tense vs. present-tense rules."
"Today the student and I had another productive session. We read, played hangman, and worked on crossword puzzles to practice reading clues and writing words. He has shown improvement since we started working in the library."
"During today's session we reviewed literary devices and elements from previous sessions, and then focused on vocabulary and critical reading skills by working though a more challenging high school level passage with accompanying multiple choice questions. The student's understanding of literary devices is developing quite well, and his ability to tackle difficult passages has improved since our first session. Vocabulary was the main obstacle he faced during the critical reading skills, but he is making steady progress here as well."
"Today, we did two reading comprehension passages. The student's mom said that he has been doing a lot better with working independently and finishing his assignments. The student was struggling considerably with pronouncing words, so we worked on breaking down large words to figure out how they should be pronounced. I left him with a worksheet with ten big words that he needs to break down and pronounce himself. I noticed that he catches on to reading strategies very quickly, such as how and when to look back at passages to find answers to questions. The student worked diligently today. I have no concerns thus far."
"We covered test prep homework and reading of news articles, as well as working on writing summaries of articles read. I saw her test scores. We discussed her need to focus on Reading and Writing as her reading and writing are still in the 30% range."
"We selected a topic for the student's next essay and crafted an outline for him to complete as he works on the assignment. The assignment is to summarize and analyze a poem of his choice. While the assignment is to be completed during school hours, he is permitted to develop an outline prior to class. The student was motivated to complete the essay and the topic was of particular interest to him."
