Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Miramar, FL Reading tutoring
We reviewed the answers from the last story and started a new story, The Sun and the Stars. The student reads well and we were able to finish the story and start on the questions. He understood the story and was able to answer the questions without too much guidance. I am going to have him finish the questions for this story and assign another reading for him for over the weekend.

We played some games I brought that taught the student about compound words. We then read a book together that I had brought and was at just the right level to challenge the student's reading level. He seemed to really enjoy both of these.

This session was mostly used to assess the student's phonemic awareness skills and sight word recognition to determine the appropriate starting point for the next session. He was enthusiastic and cooperative the entire time. He has good phonemic awareness skills, letter-sound recognition, and can blend CVC words and CVCe words well--although sometimes he has to stop to sound them out. He struggles with consonant digraphs and blends (sh, ck, th, wh), so we will work on these. Given a list of pre-primer Dolch sight words, he was able to read 32/40 (80%) with automaticity. Sight word recognition will be a big area of focus going forward. The student stated that he had had fun at the session.

Today, we read Changes (level J). The student took the quiz and got a 100. He is still struggling telling the difference between now and new. We listened to and reread The Story of the Sun (level M); he rushed through the quiz and got a 70% but took it again and got a 100%. He also read How Much is a Trillion? (level M). He took the quiz and got an 80%. (I had reminded him to take his time and read each option). We also reviewed new sight words.

We continued phonics review and read two selections on Lewis and Clark to reinforce topics covered recently in Social Studies. The student did well with both pieces even though they were very challenging. She also completed the assignment I left for her before Thanksgiving. She continues to work hard and is making progress. Next week, we will continue phonics and include reading selections that cover topics she is working on currently in science class.

The student reads single words easily when displayed on a flashcard with black ink on a white background. She has difficulty when the words are strung together on a page. We had some success with covering the rest of the words up and reading one at a time. She showed a real improvement in reading comprehension; she was able to answer questions about the story.
