Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

Miramar, FL PSAT tutoring
I had the student do a timed math section. He had trouble understanding what some of the questions were asking, so I told him to go back in his prep book to the section that discusses the types of math questions that appear on the SAT. He also did a timed grammar section. He said time pressure forced him to make some mistakes. I told him the only way to get past that was to be confident in the material -- which comes with a lot of practice and a good understanding of knowing what to look for on the test.

Today was a very good session. The student and I finished up the remaining English and math tests he had left, and he also completed a new math test as well. I showed him I would take the math test myself as well. I demonstrated the tricks and shortcuts that one can use when solving the problems (plugging in the answers to some of the given equations, understanding patterns and algebra, etc.). Overall he is getting far better at the mathematics portion of the exam and the English. He performed admirably on the last English examination he took. He will complete at least three examinations by the time I see him on Thursday, as well as review multiple vocabulary words (at least 25 SAT words) online.

In today's session, we focused on strategies to help the student work more quickly in SAT math. She was most effective when she gave herself a specific amount of time per question. We found that the first half of each math section took her about 10-25 sec/question, so by giving herself only 25 seconds/question in the beginning, she had enough time left to spend more time on the harder problems at the end. She did not sacrifice accuracy using this method for math or reading. She has a vocab app on her phone that she will continue to use to study vocab. I recommended that she go beyond 4-part multiple choice and think of her own sentences for each new word.

Today was our second session together. We continued our work on the math section of the test. The student is still working on some of the formulas that we covered last session, and I think that as soon as she gets them down, she'll see a marked improvement. Nonetheless, I'm happy with our progress. During our next session, I want to start looking at the other sections of the test.

Today we continued to work on the SAT math section. The student mentioned that she started school, so taking precalc alongside the SAT math tutoring will help her solidify the concepts tested in the SAT. We went through sub-sections of passport to advanced math (algebra II). We made a lot more progress than we expected, so hopefully in the next 2-3 session, we'll be able to move onto practice questions. For homework, I have assigned her to complete the math sections of practice test #4 of the SAT guide book.

Today we continued to work on translating word problems into mathematical form and manipulating equations. We also reviewed some geometry concepts, particularly relating to the circle--remember, angle measurement in radians = radius/arc length.
