How can a Phonics tutor help you?

Phonics is essential to your child's ability to read proficiently. Through phonics, your child learns how to identify the sounds made by letters, as well as the sounds that letters make in certain combinations together. It allows your child to "sound it out" as he or she reads, either alone or aloud. Your child may use phonics to begin decoding sentences based on letters, groups, and sounds. The subject is traditionally taught in kindergarten and first grade, allowing your child to develop strong skills to build on as he or she learns to read. If your child is struggling with these techniques and concepts, Varsity Tutors' educational directors may help you connect with a professional phonics tutor in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Through phonics instruction, your child may begin learning to link sounds to letters, allowing him or her to understand the concept of language patterns. If you are concerned that your child is struggling with phonics, or you suspect your child would enjoy learning the skills early on, Varsity Tutors' may assist you in finding a professional phonics tutor in Minneapolis. The tutor is selected based on a variety of personal factors, such as your child's learning style, understanding of phonics, past instruction, and your personal concerns, among others. Each tutor Varsity Tutors may find for you is professional, experienced, and has a proven track record for success.

I had to remind her not to guess at words and to say the sounds of the letters in the words. We used magnetic letters to work on the -uck word family. She did well with this. We did some dictation, using a sentence from the reader. She wrote 'pep' for 'pup.'

Minneapolis, MN Phonics tutoring
We began the session by me reading half of a book to the student. After I read those 4 pages, I asked him a couple questions to gauge his comprehension. I then had him read the last 4 pages and asked him some more comprehension questions. We then read a second book and alternated reading pages. We then played a game with his high frequency words cards. We ended going through his entire list of high frequency words. I am going to email his teacher to get some work we can do that reinforces the phonics concepts in these words.
