Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I worked on the properties of logarithms and their graphs. Her confidence in using these properties to solve problems significantly increased from our last session! She did well with solving for x, when given an equation involving logarithms. Her attitude toward the material reviewed was positive, which was great!"
"For today's session, the student continued to work on problems to prepare for her exam. I had her construct the unit circle from memory so she will able to do so on the exam and use it as reference. I also gave her a variety of word problems using trigonometric functions to practice breaking down word problems, sketching triangles with appropriate side lengths and angles, and using the givens to find the solutions."
"Tonight I worked again with the student preparing him for his geometry entrance exam, which covered his current course topics on algebra. I worked through more targeted problems with him tonight on the areas he had been struggling with including systems of equations, simplifying expressions, equations of lines, and distributing negative terms properly. We worked through a lot of these again. He seemed to finally understand the concepts, and ended up doing problems on his own and getting them correct. In addition, we covered the quadratic formula and inequalities again tonight, which he did improve on his understanding from the last sessions."
"In our most recent session, we covered limits, one-sided limits, and continuity. The student quickly grasped the limits concept when given the graph; initially he had a little more difficulty solving the limit when the equation was given in interval form, but after we went over a few problems, he was able to visualize what the function looked like without needing a graph. He also did really well with continuity; I showed him how to recognize the different types of discontinuities, and also gave him a list of conditions every function must meet to be considered a continuous function."
"The student and I worked on long division for polynomials, finding vertex in a parabola, completing the square, quadratic factoring, sum and difference of cubes, and synthetic division. He understood the concepts. Next session, I will include basic algebra."
"The student and I worked on both chemistry and precalculus yesterday. For chemistry, we worked on problems involving the ideal gas law and partial pressure. He seemed a little confused about calculating partial pressure at first, but he seemed to get it by the end. With PreCalc, we worked on different problems with three dimensional vectors and planes. Some of the problems were simple and we got through them quickly. A few of the problems involving 3D graphs or calculating cross products took a little longer, but he seemed to get everything just fine. Some of these problems that require visualizing three dimensional planes and vectors can be a little tricky to mentally picture, but he is definitely getting the hang of it."
