Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's tutoring session we first reviewed the student's homework (a reading and a vocabulary exercise). She got a few answers wrong on the reading exercise (I helped explain the correct answers) and got none wrong on the vocabulary exercise. We then did another reading exercise (she got some answers wrong and I explained again) and then another vocabulary exercise which she got through quickly with no mistakes. I then showed her some examples of strong introduction sentences and paragraphs for the writing section of the TOEFL and gave her three writing practice prompts. At her instigation, we did practice speaking for the last 20 minutes or so, with me asking her the type of questions she would likely encounter on the TOEFL. Lastly, I gave her some advice about doing some more practice exercises before she takes the test on Saturday."
"Looked at some more common suffixes to help with vocabulary words, then worked through a sample critical reading section from a sample test. Talked about strategies for analyzing reading passages and breaking down questions."
"Today the student and I focused on Math and Science. I graded her homework and her full section scores in English and Science. Her strong point still seems to be Math. I had her do the last 20 questions in one of the full length practice exams. We spent some time having a mini-lesson on the unit circle and reviewing some basic log rules that she was rusty on. The rest of the time we spent practicing analyzing tables/graphs in the Science section and working on identifying trends and patterns in data. For homework I assigned her a full Math and Reading section so that I can get section scores for them next week and figure out where her composite is. She is shooting for a 30 or above."
"First we discussed the student's plans for summer tutoring and the tests that she will be preparing for in the fall. Then we jumped into prep for the Math Level 1 subject test, working through a diagnostic test to see what we need to focus on. I let her work through some problems on her own, then looked back through them with her. Then we worked on a few together. I started introducing her to a few strategies to use in approaching the problems. One of the main things that we will have to focus on is pacing."
"We covered prepositions, clauses, and verb voice/mood. I also emailed the student two documents to help her review mood and prepositions. Her assignment is to work on Chapter 5 from her test prep book. The next time we meet we will cover "style" questions which will finish up our review of English concepts. We will then transition to reviewing math concepts."
"For the first half of the session, I went over the sections that I had assigned the student to complete from our last session (2 SAT Mathematics sections). We went over basic concepts that she struggled with and I answered general questions. Next, I quizzed her on the prefixes that I had assigned last week. Finally, we spent the last hour together working on passage-based question strategies and approaches to the Critical Reading section. We worked through a passage very slowly and I explained all of the questions. I assigned her one section per night for this week until we meet next time."
"We went over the student's final practice test in the GED Math workbook, and went over concepts for the questions he answered incorrectly. We specifically reviewed statistics and geometry topics. From the current test scores, the student has shown great improvement in most areas and his last practice test score seems to be enough to pass the GED Math section."
"Today we focused mainly on math. The student did extremely well, answering about 95% of the questions correctly on the first attempt. We drilled math challenge problems, along with some other math practice. We discussed problems for which picking values is the quickest approach. I think the single biggest way the student can improve his scores is by reading the questions very carefully to avoid mistakes. Conceptually, he seems to have a highly advanced understanding of mathematics and uses that understanding on test questions. I left him with Practice Test 3 as homework. No concerns to report."
"The student practiced portions of both math sections under timed conditions with a goal of getting 70% correct. Although she hasn't quite hit the mark, her percentage correct improved over 10 percentage points from last session's mark. She is reading the questions more carefully and avoiding most of the test-writers' traps. As long as she keeps practicing, she will meet her goal for her upcoming practice test."
"Completed the reading section for critical reading session. HW includes reviewing diagnostic test reading sections, and all reading section practice in book."
"She is an advanced student and is getting ready to take the October SAT. She scored okay on her diagnostic (CR 510, M 490, W 520, essay 10) but is looking to increase her scores. Part of this will be dependent on her feeling better about taking the exam but we will also work on SAT-specific strategies, of course, as well as reviewing the material. She seems up to the task of tackling the test and has a good attitude about it."
"Today we went over the sections I left him with last time. He did a good job with reading, but did struggle in terms of timing. I had asked that he not leave any blank, and so when he guessed or used extra time, more often than not his educated guess was correct. Upon review, he was good at explaining where he had picked out his answer from the text. He was noticeably making better use of marking up the answers. I left him with the rest of the test to finish, and we will go over that as well as other problems tomorrow."
