"Went over the practice problems for the test. The student seemed very well prepared for the exam. Once she drew a diagram, she could usually figure out how to solve the problem. We also went over a quick physics lab."
"Mandarin - Helped student with online speaking assignments before discussing her experiences with learning Chinese and her goals for the year. The student wants to not only expand on what is being taught in her class, but explore some of the topics from the Chinese 4 class as well. This year I will focus on providing her with supplementary vocab and grammar exercises with a focus on colloquialism and etiquette both in the language and cultural practices. The student will find herself well prepared to embark on her next journey to China!"
"Worked on the science reasoning section. The part that she is having the most issue with is reading the graphics that are provided, since things are sometimes presented in separate tables or as a multilevel graph. We worked on interpreting axes and figuring out which data was important. Then we started reviewing grammar rules for the English section."
"The student and I worked on understanding the arithmetic involved in exponential problems, and practiced methods for doing the problems. We also did an overview of logarithms and e."
"I made up a 5 question practice exam for the student to go over as we prepared for her test the following Wednesday. She was almost done with it by the time we met. I think she finally got the concept of equilibrium through various metaphors and illustrations and going carefully over the practice problem I assigned her. From there, understanding acid-base titrations should not be too difficult. She has a biology test on Friday."
"Reviewed chapters 10-12 in her physics book for a test tomorrow. Topics covered included manipulating the ideal gas law, calculating heat transferred between substances during phase changes, and calculating the efficiency and energy use of a Carnot engine."
"The student and I reviewed for his upcoming quiz on subordinate, adjective, adverb, and noun clauses. We also reviewed the various ways a noun function within a sentence (direct object, indirect object, subject, predicate nominative, object of the preposition, etc.)."
"I just worked with the student today on classwork she had done poorly on. We corrected problems she missed. Hopefully, her teacher will give her some additional credit to raise her math grade."
"We met and verified he'd entered the previous day's assignments. We then picked up on the next set of assignments. This turned out to be two written and two oral assignments. Based on the methods/process from the day before the student more quickly gathered information, vocabulary and actively pursued translations for what he needed in doing those assignments. Again, we discussed grammar points which were needed for completion. "
"The student and I focused on reading comprehension during this session, discussing how to read a passage actively. We started with the articles I assigned her, and I showed her how, with a more critical approach, she will gain a lot more from the articles she reads. We then moved to the SAT reading comprehension passages. With an aggressive approach, the student is now able to mark up her passages in a manner that has her restate the topic and highlight the author's main idea, supporting arguments, and tone. This method will free her of distractions when she answers broader questions and allow her to focus in on the meat of the argument when answering specific questions. We went through a large number of questions together, and her homework is to nail down this approach so we can focus on the intimacies of SAT reading comp before moving on."
"The student and I went over his practice test and covered all the problems he missed. We went over two practice sections and he did much better-- two errors in one section, none in the other. He'll still do incredibly well on the placement test, so I won't worry."
"Today the student and I covered arguments for the first hour and change of the session. While she did well on the strengthening/weakening questions for arguments, she did struggle with the formal logic section so we will likely revisit that question type within the next few sessions. We then did a few logic games that she did pretty well on - she is starting to need less guidance from me to work through the 2D linear games, so there is some progress being made."
