Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student completed one ACT and SAT practice exam from the last time we met. She scored a 1460, with math being her strongest subject.
Since she has the ACT coming up sooner, we decided to review that first. We spent most of the time going over the English and math sections.
She did well reviewing. It looks like the math was especially helpful to refresh for her."

"The student and I met today to cover any more problem areas in the science reasoning section. We did a couple of practice science passages. She said that she felt comfortable with that section, so we moved on to the English section. We did a couple of practice passagesone with a punctuation focus and one with a verb tense/agreement focusand found some difficult areas for her. We worked on those for the remainder of the session."
"We went over substitution, combinations, permutations and graphing today. Some of the concepts are still rusty, so we are going to work through these to get better."
"Reviewed the amendments we covered last session and then proceeded onto the topics of the US Congress (composition, bills, leadership, etc.) and the US Presidency (powers, qualifications, etc.). He seems to pick up the material pretty well."
"We worked on the student's math homework a worksheet on slope, using the pointslope formula introduced and reviewed over the past few weeks. After this, we reviewed the structure for writing a summary and applied it to a new article for her homework for World Cultures."
"Last time we talked about definitions and very few actual calculations but this time we had some numerical things to do. She took a test on Monday and she got all of the chapter one questions right. We went over the definition of a histogram and a relative frequency histogram and how to construct them. We also calculated averages and standard deviations for a set of numbers. We only had time to carry out one example but she seemed satisfied and was able to work through the logic herself."
"Today's session went great. The student had a basic understanding of the subject but just needed some reinforcement on it. I taught him a technique to memorize the unit circle and gave him tips on how to go about solving trig questions. We also went over trig identities and how to rearrange them to show proofs. The student showed great progress in our first session. Our next session will be next Monday at 7 p.m."
"The student and I spent time going over his math. We worked with simplifying expressions with exponents. We then worked on solving problems with variables. We worked on identifying quadrilaterals as rectangles, squares, parallelograms, kites, and trapezoids."
"The student's Geometry class was about the begin the topic of volume, so I went ahead and started introducing the concept of volume, defining what a volume is and why the unit has a cube attached to it. We also reviewed some important concepts from previous lessons, such as total surface area. I also provided her some pointers on how she could achieve more in Math in general. Since I knew that she was interested in a Computer Science major, I also started introducing to her some basic concepts involved in Discrete Math. She enjoyed the new topic and found it relatively easy."
"General overview of GRE (structure and format) Discussion of client's goals and time frame for preparing for exam text completion (went over problems and discussed strategy) verbal section strategy discussed plans for next meeting"
"We reviewed and corrected a worksheet previously assigned as homework on rounding whole numbers and decimals. We also quickly covered expressions with less than (<) and greater than (>). These topics (place value, rounding, and value comparisons) will be tested on her next math quiz. She feels confident about value comparison questions. I've given her more homework on rounding to help ingrain the steps required to solve such problems.
Additionally, we prepared for the next day's lesson and review questions on plant and animal tissues with a mock true/false quiz."

"We talked about what the student found challenging when she took the SAT in November. Based on this, we mainly focused on writing multiple choice and reading sections. We discussed specific grammatical principles (to be expanded on in future sessions) as well as overall testtaking strategies."
