"We've done two edits of the student's statement of purpose for a graduate program. For the most part, I concentrated on separating him from the other candidates by avoiding the "standard" sentences of applicants. Originality and an assertive, excited tone were the goals."
"After exchanging introductions, the student and I studied the components of an effective paragraph. I then tasked him with writing a persuasive essay. As he worked on that, I put my comments on a school essay he had recently completed. At the end, we went over my comments on his school essay, paying particular attention to correct comma usage. For next time, he'll use my comments to rewrite his school essay, and I'll give him feedback on the persuasive essay he gave me."
"Today we worked on correcting two paragraphs that the student had written over vacation. His assignment was to write a paragraph that contained all 4 types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory and imperative) on the subject of fishing. The other paragraph was an explanatory one in which he explained how to plant a tree. In each he was to have a minimum of 5 sentences and that each sentence had to modify the topic sentence. He did great!"
