Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Hayden in San Marcos, TX
Today's session was used to prepare for the student's midterm next Thursday. We had the opportunity to review all of the material that has been covered up to this point in the semester. We focused mainly on the early material, as I wanted to refresh her on the basic concepts. We finished the session by reviewing any uncertain quiz questions as well as any particularly troubling concepts. She has done a great job memorizing and understanding the material. With two class review sessions, I have no doubt that she will do great on her midterm. We will meet again after the next week in order to cover new material.

Since it was our first session, the hour was used to gauge where the student was struggling and the problems that he is having. After talking to him, it just seemed like he was overwhelmed with the material and needed a way to organize everything in his mind. So, while we talked and elaborated on some of the concepts that he did not fully understand, we also discussed my recommendations for his approach on studying for his quiz (mainly, reviewing the notes and rewriting/reorganizing them in his own words and discretion).

The student and I discussed her microscope and the associated equipment for her online microbiology course. She set up and used her microscope to focus on a printed letter "E" on a slide, blood, and yogurt. She recorded detailed observations and was very open to suggestions for help with the microscope. She can use her CD that was provided by her professor to learn more basics of light microscopy and finish her lab report as required.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Ian in San Marcos, TX
This week, the student and I covered DNA replication, transcription and translation in great detail. As this was our first session, we spent a few minutes discussing goals and objectives for our time together but then jumped right in and were able to accomplish a lot! By the end of our session, she was able to explain the difference between mRNA and tRNA, the lagging and leading strands of DNA, and how some of the key enzymes work in order to achieve this process. Next week we will be focusing on newly presented material before her test. I feel that our time was really productive and I look forward to working with her in the future.

We went over the student's lab practical and ways to identify bacteria. We covered pub med and research articles. The student is struggling with some of the material's organization, and I encouraged him to reach out to his teacher. I suggested a good study aid.
