Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Ahmad in Pflugerville, TX
Today we covered electric field, refraction, energy of electromagnetic waves, and plane mirrors. I explained that electric field has the same direction as force, since force divided by charge is electric field. We learned that for positive charges, the electric field points out of the particle. For negative charges, the electric field points into the particle. I used a positive test charge to explain the direction of the field, which the student was having trouble understanding initially. We covered that the lower the wavelength of electromagnetic waves, the higher the frequency, and higher the energy. For the wave refraction, we learned that the direction and speed changes when changing media. Finally for plane mirrors, the image and object distances are equal. The magnification is one. The student was eager to learn the material and understood everything fairly well.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Zachary in Pflugerville, TX
Tonight we reviewed for the student's physics final tomorrow. We covered electricity, circuits, and a little relativity. We worked through multiple choice problems. I left him an equation sheet with the most important equations for electricity and magnetism, and the units of some useful quantities such as energy, power, potential, et cetera.

Tonight the student and I went over acids and bases, ionization and dissociation equations. We had to work through a couple of the definitions of these terms, but overall, he got the basic concepts by the end of our session. We completed his worksheet in preparation for his test tomorrow, and he feels confident about the subject matter.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Caroline in Pflugerville, TX
I met the student tonight and he showed me the most recent class notes and slides so I could get an idea of what they have covered so far in class. We discussed balancing chemical equations and identifying variables in the given word problems. I spent the majority of the session walking him through problems from the book where we balanced equations, identified what the question was asking, and calculated % mass, % yield, and % error. He was very eager to learn the material. I left him to finish the chapter 3 questions marked in red from his textbook as he can check his answers. We will be meeting again on Sunday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Dominique in Pflugerville, TX
The main focus of the session was learning about the ocean currents. The student was to watch a short video about the ocean currents, and then answer questions from a handout sheet that were based on specifics covered in the video. Questions on the handout sheet included questions about gyros, surface currents, gulf streams, global conveyor belts, etc. She didn't show interest in answering questions on the handout sheet, however she showed interest in watching the video. To help make answering the questions more fun, she had the opportunity to answer the questions on the iPad. Because the questions on the handout sheet had some difficult vocabulary terms, we also went over some vocabulary terms. Also, the questions had many questions based on geography, so the assistance of a map was used in being able to answer the questions. During the session, she demonstrated strength in geography, which also helped make the subject more engaging for her.
