Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Alexei in Lynn, MA
We had another excellent session today; the student understands chemistry much better than 99% of my students and will be a fantastic chemist. Today we reviewed problems on states of matter and then calculations of gas laws. The student is doing very well and is getting better at providing solutions with the correct number of significant figures. We covered how to calculate densities and masses of gases in different conditions of temperature and pressure; properties of solutions, like solubilities, solute vs solvent, solutions of gas, liquid and solid; miscible vs immiscible, and saturated, unsaturated and supersaturated solutions. The student will be taking his exam in a week or so, so we will try to meet a few more times before.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Alexandra in Lynn, MA
The student and I met today to begin reviewing for her next anatomy and physiology test on the respiratory system. I was thrilled to hear that she received a 96 on her last exam covering the circulatory and lymphatic system! Since our strategies for the last test appear to have been successful, we decided she'd continue with working through her packet with me pointing out important concepts and breaking them down to ensure that she possessed a firm understanding of them. I am very glad to see that she is constantly explaining definitions, key points, and pathways back to me as this serves to confirm her understanding of the material and allows me to correct any minute misunderstandings she may have. Specifically, we covered the processes of inspiration and expiration (what muscles are involved, which process is active and passive, what are the relative pressures inside and outside of the lungs), factors affecting ventilation, processes that are altered during disease, the formula for vital capacity and began discussing the Hb saturation curve. Already, the student seems much more comfortable with this material than that covered on the last test and we have arranged to meet for a few more sessions to continue preparing for her test.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Isadora in Lynn, MA
During our last tutoring session, the student worked on an assignment for his science class having to do with the importance of our sense of sound and the evolution of hearing. It was a semi-creative assignment, meaning that the question was open ended and there was no right or wrong answer. The student had begun the assignment when I arrived, and finished it with my assistance.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Daphne in Lynn, MA
We discussed her progress in her biology class. The session began with a discussion of what areas she was struggling in and whether she wanted to focus more on the lab or lecture portion of the class. Since she has a lab exam this Saturday, we decided to focus on a few key areas of the lab. Specifically, we talked about DNA, its structure, its role, and how we visualize it through gel electrophoresis. We also discussed animal development and cell differentiation in starfish very briefly. The session ended with me giving her a few links to help better understand DNA and gel electrophoresis. I also gave her some tips about making more diagrams and watching videos to help her better visualize information since she is a visual learner.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Kathryn in Lynn, MA
The student and I covered two sections of her algebra chapter and then moved on to chemistry. We focused a little on Algebra and understanding the new concepts that her trig lesson was covering. After going through the topics it became clear for her. The topics that she is covering can be a little tricky because there is no solution to solve for. The task is to simply strengthen the statement by rewriting the equation in opposite terms. She was doing well after a few problems and I think she was getting the hang of it. We moved on the chemistry portion, because she had a quiz this week. In chemistry she is still covering pressure and equations covering ideal gas law. She was doing well here because it's mostly plugging into an equation and solving for an unknown. We did focus more on mole conversions because they were presented in liters rather than grams.
