Microbiology Tutoring review by Christopher in Akron, OH
Today, we solved 5 problems from the student's homework. The problems were more difficult than usual problems for this section and were good examples of what difficult test questions would be like. All the problems were based on forces, with the first question using the sum of forces to find a component force of the net force, and the later questions about using Newton's law of gravitation to find the location for a particular force. The last question was about the difference of weight experienced on elevators, which results from the normal force. In general, she did very well, following the problems easily once I helped to initially set up the equation.

The student had some pulley problems that were giving him difficulty. After working on one for a while, I showed him the 6-step method for solving force problems, and he seemed pleased to have something concrete to apply to the problems. He was then able to do them without any difficulty.

Today we covered eukaryotic and prokaryotic transcription. The student is doing well and has a good understanding of the broad concepts. She will need to commit the finer details to memory, which should be an easy task by the next exam (10 days). She is showing a good work ethic and committing a good amount of time to reaching her goal of an A grade for the next test. We went over her lecture notes and I used some sketches to reiterate core concepts. I asked her to make some tables to show the comparisons/ contrasts of some basic molecular biology processes and have sent her some online videos to review and solidify some concepts. We also talked about her first exam and the need to pay particular attention to wording and subtle definition differences. I believe she will do well on her next exam.

We focused on a variety of forces in this session, with a specific focus on centripetal force and frictional force. We again worked on translating from problem statements to diagram-based visualization.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Ethan in Akron, OH
Today we covered position, velocity, and acceleration graphs, as well as projectile motion problems. The student seems to understand most of the concepts, but often jumps to a quick and not fully correct conclusion, in an eager attempt to finish quickly. She understood the concepts covered, and asked me for any tips, or tricks to look for. I reminded her to really read the problem, and try to find all info given to her in the problem, especially when the wording is tricky. I left her with some examples to practice, and some overall tips regarding projectile motion.
