Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I spent approximately half the time practicing reading out of several easy reading books (specifically, at word recognition and sounding out the vowels of more difficult words) and the other half practicing letter-writing. He was cooperative throughout the session and approached more difficult tasks with notably less anxiety than in some previous sessions. He did quite well in terms of recognizing words. As always, he has his workbooks to practice with if so desired (his favorite is the book that uses the erasable marker, which we used during this session)."
"The student and I discussed the book of Jekyll and Hyde in the session. I brought a summary of the story, including a list of important characters. I taught her how to tackle big, complex readings - first, you read the summary to get the gist; then, you list the characters and their relationships; finally, you read the book to put in the details marking key points as you go. This is a very efficient and effective method to tackle such assignments. After she went through the summary, we discussed the characters and the different crucial moments in the story, which was followed by a Q/A session."
"The student and I reviewed her homework. We ran through her sight words twice. The first time she got 7/11 right and the second time 10/11. We also read 6 sentences using her sight words, and she was able to read them with a little help from me. Next, she and I reviewed her math homework. We counted forward to 15 and then backwards from 15 and answered some math word problems for her homework. After this, we did a spring word search together and read a Dr Seuss story to celebrate Dr Seuss' birthday."
"I provided help and support in going over an old English/ language arts test and in reading comprehension. We reviewed some mistakes she made on her old test. The concepts included reading a passage and answering comprehension questions. We reread the passage together, and she answered the questions after going over the passage. She did quite well with questions that required analysis. For reading comprehension, we read some passages in her reading skills book, and she answered comprehension questions, getting them all correct."
"I'm so sad this is our last session! I have really enjoyed working with the student. He is a great student and has improved so much. He has been so wonderful to work with and his open communication was incredibly helpful! We got through chapter 14 in our book, and I told him he could finish it up over Christmas break if he wanted to. He is reading so much better, he even added a southern accent to the character with a southern drawl today!"
"In this session, I administered a Kindergarten readiness assessment. I will give all my notes and finished assessments to his mom next session. I will summarize my findings. The student knows all of his letters in a random order, can count to 16 without a mistake, knows the sound of most letters with the exception of about 4, he can spell his first name, he recognizes it in writing sometimes, is starting to write some letters, he has started to learn "school culture" and is focused more on lessons. He is showing so much improvement overall and will definitely be ready for Kindergarten when school begins again. He and his mom worked on the at words together this week and she said he did really well. Tutoring and his day school seem to be pushing him in the right direction!"
