Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on practice problems involving patterns, square roots, logarithms, and trig. He is excellent at finding patterns and making quick calculations, but he is a bit rusty on certain rules he hasn't had to use in a while. We reviewed the properties of logarithms and did a brief review of trig, which we will explore more in the next session."
"The student and I worked on SAT math today. I had her do a timed SAT non-calculator section and then we went through all the answers together. I got a good idea of some material we might want to review: functions, formulas for plane geometry, exponents, and trigonometry. She often found that problems that had looked intimidating were much easier once we broke them down. I think continued practice will continue to increase her confidence. Overall, this was a good first session!"
"The student and I worked on SSAT math and reading. We reviewed all material included in the tests. I gave her two practice tests. She scored 24/25 in Math and 32/40 in Reading. We did error analysis. She needs improved vocabulary and work on inferences. We will meet next week to discuss the test more and work on these areas."
"The student and I worked on the Math section -- both calculator and non-calculator -- for our session today. We plowed through two full sections and I'm generally happy with the work he did. With the calculator section, he is getting very good at starting and developing his work on problems. He has trouble when there's a final step (like, "find X, then what's X/5") after a complex equation and will often answer one step too early. He also struggles some with continuing to try and remember Algebra I and II memorized equations when the information he needs is more simply in front of him. He did extremely well with the first half of the non-calculator Math section. He answered nearly ten in a row before hitting a wall at the end of our session and missing a few softballs before we called it a night. As I've noted before, endurance will be a big thing for him. We will continue to work on this next session."
"The student and I worked on the math section of one of the practice tests and went over a lot of word problems. She just needs some practice thinking them through. She needs to read the question carefully so she doesn't miss important points. Her homework is to do a timed practice test for reading and writing (the 3rd one in the book) and to email me with the number of right answers for each section."
"The student and I worked on the math section of the SSAT. We reviewed equation-based problems. We also covered exponent rules, finding angle measures on a line, finding perpendicular and parallel slopes, and alternating between slope intercept form and standard form."
