Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I reviewed the English and Reading sections of the ACT. She missed only seven questions on the English section, which is impressive. We will try to bring this number down to five or less going forward. She did extremely well dissecting on the Reading section passages and answered all the associated questions correctly. As she read the passage, she wrote out quick descriptions of each paragraph, which really helped her answer the questions quickly and correctly."
"Today, the student and I started by going over the practice reading test he did for homework. He had the most trouble with the third section, which he said happens a lot, so we will cover more humanities passages next session. After this, we did two ACT science practice tests. He missed only four questions on the official test, which would scale to a score of about 30. Since he's completed this test, he has finished the entire practice test, which he got a 29 on. I think the key for him will be finding a balance between working carefully and working quickly on these tests. Next session we plan on starting to work through the next practice test in order."
"Today, the student and I went over the advanced topics for the math section, and we had a conference with his mother about his study habits. I incorporated the unfinished assignment into a new assignment to complete a full practice test."
"Today, the student and I went over the essay that he wrote for me as practice on the Writing test. He is doing well at fulfilling the basic requirements of the prompt, but he needs to flesh out his arguments more. Additionally, he should make sure that his thesis is absolutely clear from the first paragraph and should take a completely firm position throughout. After going through the essay, we worked on identifying main ideas in paragraphs and whole passages and performed some practice questions on this very subject. We concluded with a review of several different math concepts that he struggled with on his diagnostic, and we'll pick up where we left off tomorrow evening."
"Today, the student and I went over the homework assigned from last time, which was part of a practice test for the Science section. She definitely showed improvement, and we went over the questions she got wrong or had trouble with. Afterwards, we started work on the Math section, and we worked on that for the majority of the session. I have assigned her a section of the Math practice test to work on until our next meeting, in order to assess where she is currently and where we can improve. We had a great session today, and she is working hard and demonstrating clear improvement."
"Today, the student and I went over the packet that I assigned her last week, and I've assigned her a few minimal corrections. Largely, she seems to be understanding the concepts introduced last week. Today, we discussed the domain, range, and inverse of functions in depth. I asked her to complete corrections and to do some exploring into the flashcards regarding domain, range, and inverse. We will continue with these topics on Thursday, in addition to moving on to some new concepts."
