Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did a great job with his fluency, writing, and vocabulary. We started off the session with his fluency. He practiced the strategy he learned last time- reading common phrases in a minute. Next, we worked on his writing. He had written his introduction last session, so we focused on the 2nd paragraph of his day off of school. In order to get a clear beginning, middle, and end of his Nerf gun war, I had him sketch a 3 block cartoon to narrow down all the possible events of this war. He decided to stick with ambushing his friend who didn't know he was invited to a Nerf gun war- he thought he was invited to a pool party! The student focused on dialogue (quotation marks), vivid verbs, and transition words to chain his events together. He had some great creative ideas, but needed guidance and modeling, as to make each event clear with enough details to paint a whole picture. His attitude was fantastic- he wrote for probably 30-45 minutes. He was motivated to re-read parts and make corrections/improvements, and he read with expression. We ended his session with synonym practice. The student had been practicing his vocabulary words with flashcards/visual cues at home, so we have been doing the synonyms. Several words he looked back at his cards for cues, which was great. Once he knew the meaning of the word, he was able to easily choose the best synonym. As long as he continues to regularly review his vocabulary, I think he will do well on his vocabulary section. Next session, we will do sentence completion, RUNNERS strategies for reading comprehension, and his next event in writing. He's doing a great job with a great attitude!"
"This was our second session together. After the student's stellar performance last week, we finally encountered some types of problems that he was unfamiliar with. Ratios, volume, algebra and decimals are all subjects that I want to focus on during the upcoming weeks. We did a critical reading section today as well and he did very well; his analytical approach to reading is perfect for these types of tests."
"We worked on algebraic equations and focused on simplifying the problems. This is a new area for the student and above her grade level curriculum. We are going to spend more time during our sessions and during the week working on these."
