Session Summaries by Middle School Math Tutors

Memphis, TN Middle School Math tutoring
We focused on reviewing. We worked on converting, multiplying, and dividing decimals and percents. He has no problem working them out, but he often didn't set them up right, so we focused on that. Towards the end of the session I gave him a two problem quiz, and he was able to do both correctly the first time. We will check next session to make sure he has the concepts firmly down.

Student 1 has continued learning about data and statistics. We began by discussing the relative merits of a bar graph, line plot, and table for representing data, and the student listed the pros of each format. We then focused on understanding the relationship between the median and the mean. In his homework, he was asked to make a line plot with a certain number of points and a given average. He then needed to make a new line plot with different points. Through this exercise, he learned what a graph looks like when it has a median lower than/higher than its mean. We discussed those types of graphs as being either skewed left or skewed right. Student 2 did well on her last math test. In preparation for her upcoming test, I had her practice solving quadratic equations using all four methods that she has learned: factoring, quadratic formula, square root of both sides, and completing the square. Her strongest methods were the quadratic formula and taking the square root of both sides. I gave her additional practice for completing the square, because she was least comfortable with it. By the end of the session, she could verbally list each step needed to solve a quadratic by completing the square.

The student had a great day today, working hard and focusing. We covered area and circumference of a circle, but didn't dive too heavily into word problems. She has been assigned some word problems on this topic for homework, and I will evaluate those with her on Friday. Also on Friday we will cover area and perimeter of irregular shapes.

We covered addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimals. We worked on a "pre-assessment" worksheet. It is meant to test the student's abilities and help the teacher understand what needs to be covered and who needs the most help. I expect the teacher will have some specific strategies, but I went ahead and showed him some of my own methods. For this unit, writing down the steps will be key to his success as multiplying decimals is extremely difficult to do in your head. We also went over a few of the strategies he likely missed on his last test, including LCM and GCF.

Another great session. We worked on the scientific method and did some more algebra. The student has progressed so much over the last 4 months!

We went over the student's quizzes and homework; many of his problems were a result of rushing to do mental math, and were fixed when he looked at the question again. He has a great grasp of the actual processes involved, and breezed through the sampling of his new homework that we covered. I even had time to expand on the basis of combinatorics he's getting into--the link between combinations/counting, Pascal's triangle, and the binomial theorem is a really cool one that I was able to cover, and he seemed excited by it.
