Recent Medical Park Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Anna in Medical Park, NY
Our first session went well today. When describing herself and her attitude towards math, the student told me that she recently took the ACT and math was her weakest subject. She said that she has trouble figuring out the steps needed to solve a problem, even if she feels she understands the concept and what the problem is asking. We decided that we will mostly spend our sessions reviewing material that she is working on during her own time. Today we started just with some problems from the website, mostly problems regarding proportionality and scaling. By the end of three problems she was doing great. We also reviewed some basic percentage arithmetic and fraction-decimal conversion, which she did great with as well. We finished with a word problem that asked us to come up with an equation for the scenario described. With all the problems we did, the student had great instincts to immediately write down necessary information and define variables. I got the sense that she sometimes over-thinks things a little bit, so in future session we will work on building her confidence by doing lots of practice problems. I think doing lots of practice will also help her become quicker with solving problems, and not hesitant about what steps to take. We talked a little about visualizing problems in an effective way, and I look forward to working on that more in the future with this student.

This afternoon we did some math review (plotting points on a graph; adding and subtracting mixed numbers) and spent some time planning his Apollo project--he mapped out how he wanted to arrange his display board, and we talked a bit about the Greek words that he wants to incorporate into the poster.

Tutoring review by Meghan in Medical Park, NY
The student and I reviewed for a test he was having the next day. His test was going to cover transformations, behavior of functions, domain and range, and word problems involving two variables and two unknowns. The student was able to do most of the problems by himself, he had some trouble with the translations of certain functions. I had the student do some extra practice problems from the practice problems from the online platform. He did well with those and he was going to review the basic functions that would be on the test and the properties of translations. The student was able to use his calculator to find information where allowed on his test. The student seemed well prepared for his exam.

Tutoring review by Tashnin in Medical Park, NY
The concepts that we covered during our session were English, history, and trigonometry. We mostly focused on the English portion regarding the content of the books that he was reading, and brainstorming a list of ideas/ topics that he could use for class discussion/ essays. He was struggling the most, at the moment, with English, which was what we were focusing on. The student was very attentive, and really started to grasp the main ideas/ details of the books that he was assigned for the semester. I included strategies and study skills in this session, and he was receptive to them.

The student did great! We worked through some of the algebra we would see on the exam. We also did some arithmetic that she might see on the exam. Most of the latter half of the session was spent teaching algebra concepts she would see on the exam. She is awesome, she just needs a little bit more practice with algebra to become more confident.
