Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I focused on the present subjunctive, present perfect subjunctive, and the past/imperfect subjunctive and when to use which in a sentence. The past subjunctive is one of the hardest tenses, so we will revisit it again next week."
"The student started a new chapter in class and needed to review his new vocabulary words, which deal with professional careers. Together, he and I made his new flash cards, and we reviewed the new vocabulary until he felt sufficiently familiarized. We finished Spanish early, but he also needed assistance with his Personal Finance coursework. As part of his Personal Finance class, he needed to chart out a plan for reaching a financial goal. The plan needed to touch upon what type of education and job he would need to obtain his goal. I helped him identify a goal (own a new Honda Civic), academic track, and job. I also helped him find websites that would contain relevant information (car sites, college sites, job sites)."
"After this session, we will have one more before June, so during this session we worked on converting all the grammar topics we have been going over into flash cards. After that, I decided on an activity to help the student synthesize her knowledge of different topics by writing her own sentences. I drew two cards from the pile at a time (e.g., direct object pronouns and the past subjunctive) and gave her the task of composing a sentence that incorporated both topics. We hit some bumps in her understanding, but part of the purpose of the exercise was to draw out any challenges. Overall I think the activity was successful in showing her how much she needs to review on her own before her final exam. I gave her the assignment of repeating the exercise five more times on her own (with different combinations of cards) before our next session."
"Student and tutor worked on exercise in textbook dealing with familiar and negative commands. Tutor generated a list of verbs for student, who made and filled out a chart with the infinitive forms given, filling in the imperative forms. The student practiced pronouncing the commands and conjugating."
"During this session we finished preparing a PowerPoint presentation about the Mayan numerical system. Later, we completed two worksheets using the past perfect tense and practiced with oral examples."
"The student worked on lots of vocabulary: the park, inside the house, outside the house, some school-related things. We also clarified some grammatical concepts (in English). Next time I'm going to continue drawing pictures with her since that seems to be working."
