"We reviewed the practice ACT test that he completed in preparation for class, then we worked through a science section together."
"We discussed the next few chapters. She is still having some trouble understanding the meaning of paragraphs or even sentences, and we figured out that it typically comes from formulating very loose or inaccurate definitions of some words. With more attention to those details, she'll be in much better shape. We connected that idea to the larger concept of the author's universe. Vonnegut didn't have to include a particular scene with children playing hide-and-go seek, but he invented those children so as to play the game - why would he do that? And we see that the narrator feels as though he's hiding, and perhaps wants to be found, but definitely hopes the game/hunt ends soon. So we get a clearer picture of what the narrator is thinking and feeling through them. Then we looked over her reading passages from homework, where she did phenomenally, missing only one to three questions in each passage. Honing in on specific words, especially strongly charged ones, will help immensely here too."
"Going through the homework I gave her last time, there were 5/40 that she was unable to answer on her own, and of the rest, she incorrectly answered roughly another 5. This means she was able to understand well enough to explain to me 30/40 on the Science portion. We'll do another test on the subject next time we meet. We moved on to English, which she was quite proficient at. Then we looked at reading. Of the ten we did, she got 3 correct, so I will have her try a different method of working through the reading section next time."
