Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on her assignment on thermoregulation today. She was very quick to correctly answer the questions. We also covered the immune system curriculum, which she understood very well."
"The student has a test tomorrow and so we worked on some of her review problems together. She is getting better with problem set-up."
"The circuit project is coming together very well. The student has decorated the box to hold the project. He has made a racing track for his little car. There are lights installed several places that go on and off on demand. He also made a couple of Lego trees. He has worked very hard on this project and has learned a great deal."
"The student and I covered Torque today, going over homework problems. I helped her with set up of problems (something she said she was struggling with) and walked her through each problem step-by-step, while explaining the concepts behind the problems and Torque. She is bright and a quick learner, and I believe the one on one sessions are what's going to really push her above her class."
"Today, the student was preparing for a mid-term exam and we solved some practice problems that we started on Tuesday. She is much improved today compared to Tuesday. The subject of discussion was chemical equilibria, acid-base equilibria and kinetics. We discussed how to calculate half-life of zero order, first order and second order reactions. From half-life and concentration, we discussed how to calculate rate constants. We discussed how to select the strongest and weakest conjugate acid or conjugate base from a list of acids and bases with chemical dissociation constants. She solved some pH problems and talked about how to identify, from a list of salts, the solutions in water are acidic, basic or neutral. Finally, I gave her some practice problems to solve. Next week, we will change topic to common ion effect, buffer solutions and acid-base titrations."
"We covered cellular respiration - glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation. Concepts were explained using real world examples. We finished the worksheet on the cellular respiration chapter."
"We covered the saturation curve of oxygen and the different things that can affect the affinity of oxygen to hemoglobin. The student had a better understanding of this so she was excited to keep learning about it. She was struggling the most with trying to remember the different molecules and condition that decreases the affinity of oxygen. But instead of brute memorization, I explained why each condition affects oxygen and that way made her learn it and memorize it better. Overall it was a great session."
"We read some more of the relativity book. This time we talked about the relativity of simultaneity. The student is taking the material very seriously, so I think he will get to the clear understanding that he wants."
"Yesterday the student and I went over kinetics. I helped him understand the theory behind kinetics and went thoroughly went over his lecture notes with him. He has a pretty good intuitive understanding of the topic. Whenever I would quiz him with questions, he was able to answer correctly and explain his reasoning. We went through his future homework assignment for his class. I also had extra questions that I had prepared for him. We then went over rate laws and rate equations. He has a good understanding of kinetics and rates."
"We went over hybridization of bond orbitals, the molecular orbital theory, how to recognize covalent and ionic bonds and we also went over polar molecules and their resulting dipole moments. I sent her a worksheet to help her identify covalent and ionic bonds. This was our last session."
"We went over her mastering physics relating to the Doppler effect. She was initially confused on the concepts but she seems to be more comfortable after working through some problems. She read the textbook for this material and that seems to have helped a lot. I suggest that she continues with that."
"Since we last had a session, the student took a quiz in class and scored 87- which rounds up to an A by her teacher. Fantastic improvement, she has gained a lot of confidence in her chemistry abilities. Tonight we covered more of thermodynamics. We took practice quizzes and worked on problems that will be covered in an exam that is next week."
