"The student and I started the session with a discussion of circle equations and the method of completing the square. We then transitioned into trigonometry, particularly focusing on a few identities, and maximum and minimums of functions. Our discussion led us to work on limits, which ties in nicely with the beginnings of Calculus I. Much of our discussion was on the theory and philosophy behind various mathematical concepts, which she really enjoyed and which helped her better understand the content."
"The student and I went over how to take the limits of functions, including piecewise functions. We talked about left and right hand limits and graphed many of the functions to show how and why limits work out the way they do. This was all pre-teaching to what the professor is going to teach on Wednesday, which puts her ahead of the game!"
"The student and I went over related rates and initial value problems. I advised him to start drawing out the problem first and labeling his factors, then plug them into an equation. If he gets stuck, I advised him to go back and see if he's already been given the value for one of his variables."
"The student and I went over two assignments. The first involved knowing the critical points of the parent function from the information given from the graph of the derivative. As long as he remembers what critical points mean, he should be able to do those problems. On the second assignment, the questions were about finding inflection points by taking the second derivative. He does fine on these. I appreciate his perseverance through these concepts. I also like how he is not afraid to say he doesn't understand something."
"The student and I worked intensively on covering the important points of trigonometry that he needs to know to be ready for calculus. I was very happy about how much he remembers from trigonometry."
"The student and I worked mostly on derivatives today. This included the power rule, product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule. We also talked about the definition of derivatives, derivatives of trig functions, and applications to extremal problems."
