Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our session, the student continued working on her road atlas map project, which is due next week. She had not worked any further on the project due to other papers, assignments, and projects being due. She just needed some guidance in terms of how to start each session. She took a while to understand what each part of the assignment was asking her to do, but once I guided her towards the specific things she was supposed to be looking for, she progressed fairly quickly. She can call me anytime tomorrow (Saturday) if she has any questions on the project."
"During today's session, I introduced the student to the quadratic formula and how to find the two solutions of quadratic equations. I modeled how to use the formula, how to use the calculator to simplify the real solutions and how to use the imaginary number (i^2 = -1) to find complex solutions. She did really well with substituting in the formula, finding the discriminant and determining if the function had real or complex solutions. We agreed to continue with quadratic equations during the next session, focusing on factoring, FOIL method, review using the quadratic formula and complex solutions."
"First, I went over the student's homework assignment for Caribbean history I asked her to do the day before. We reviewed the material in the textbook, and I asked her some questions about what the chapter said to help her revise the assignment. I also gave some pointers on the annotated page she had to complete. We also continued the practice test in Algebra we started yesterday. Lots of the questions today were about simplifying equations and solving for a variable. The trick here is doing to one side whatever you do to the other. I walked her through some of the problems, and then had her attempt to solve them on her own. Her score on the practice test improved to 95, from her previous best of 73. Finally, she asked me to look at some of her Astronomy homework. We went through the questions about the relative sizes and distances of objects in the Solar System for some time."
"For review at chap. 2 we covered functions, their Domain, Range, Graphs, and x-y-intercepts. He struggled most with the Range; his attitude was excellent. I included a lot of study skills and strategies. For homework he has 25 practice problems."
"For this session, we started with parabolas and how to graph them when given the function. I showed him how to determine the vertex, line of symmetry, and intercept if it is not given in a reduced form. I also showed him how to find the vertex, the y-intercept, whether it opens up or down, and the narrowness of the graph if it is in vertex form. He seems to struggle with tracking negative signs and has trouble working slowly in the beginning so he can fully understand and practice a concept. For Thursday, we will cover more on parabolas."
"For this session, we worked through a prepared packet of review questions. The packet was 6 pages and roughly 76 questions. The focus of the questions was a review of the material that has been covered in the student's class this year. He was able to work through the majority of the questions with ease. The area that he's still having trouble with is percentages."
